Platform Orientation
Your Profile
Building an inviting profile is key to connecting with mentees. I’d recommend uploading five short videos that really reflect your authentic experiences. These videos don’t have to be fancy—just you sharing what you’re passionate about. Also, try to post at least one new video each month to keep your profile fresh and updated. Remember, your audience is high school students who are facing that inevitable question: “What do you want to do with the rest of your life?” To really connect with them, think back to your own junior or senior year in high school. What were your worries, your hopes? When creating your videos, always consider what you’re sharing through the eyes of your high school self—but with the wisdom of a few more years under your belt. This perspective will help you resonate more deeply with your mentees.
Using Calendar
As an Upptik Mentor, scheduling your availability is straightforward. You’ll mark your availability in the My Upptik section of your account. You can set your availability up to two weeks in advance for audio, video, or real-time chat sessions. When a mentee books a session with you, you’ll get a notification email. Make sure to accept the booking in your My Upptik section to confirm the meeting. On the day of the session, you’ll join the meeting directly from the My Upptik section. It’s designed to be simple and efficient.
Reliability
Creating a positive experience for students is paramount, and one key way to ensure this is by keeping your schedule up-to-date. As a mentor, your reliability is not only a reflection of your commitment but also of the trust and professionalism that Upptik stands for. While canceling or rescheduling sessions may sometimes be necessary, please be aware that excessive cancellations can negatively impact your mentor rating, visibility, and ability to receive future bookings. This will make it hard for you to intern for enough hours to meet your needs for credit. By regularly updating your availability settings, you help avoid scheduling conflicts, prevent inconvenience for students, and uphold the integrity of both your reputation and the Upptik brand. Thank you for your dedication to providing consistent and reliable guidance to our students.
Safety
One really important thing to remember: as mentors, we’re not serving as therapists or mental health professionals. Our role is to guide, support, and share our experiences, not to provide any kind of mental health counseling. If you ever notice red flags in your conversation—like a mentee expressing thoughts of self-harm, talking about abuse, or any other serious concerns—please don’t try to handle it on your own. The best thing to do is to encourage them to speak with a trusted adult, like a parent, teacher, or school counselor. If it seems urgent, don’t hesitate to direct them to call 911 for emergencies or 211 for mental health support. If you’re unsure, you can reach out to Upptik support for advice on the next steps, but always prioritize the mentee’s immediate safety.
